Project’s Description
In a 36-acre plot, which is characterised by a gentle slope, we designed and are currently overseeing construction of the commercial, manufacturing and administrative facilities of a company whose objective is the trading, storage and processing of olive products. The project matured over the time according to the decisions of the company owner who wanted the vertical integration of the services and products by gathering the uses and operations of the company in a single plot. The complex building program, the future extension program, the use of the existing grid foundation in the olive mill area, the different construction phases, the circulation in the surroundings and the operational specificities of the olive mill in specific times of the year shaped the final design. The industrial wing is directly exposed to the provincial road, therefore we strengthened the linearity of the building by placing the prefabricated panels horizontally. It consists of an elongated linear volume which is 11m high and hosts the commercial activity of the company. At its end, there is a loading flank with self-supporting independent loading stations while it has been taken into consideration the possibility of future building extensions. The open plot space is used both as a depot and manoeuvring space for heavy vehicles. The west facade is dominated by the monolithic volume of the administration offices, lined with perforated metal sheets whose size and position resulted from the parametric analysis of the relationship between the required light intensity and the position on the facade surface. The olive mill is positioned adjacent to the industrial wing, forming vehicle host platform between the buildings. Its powerful symbolism, the double curvature of the surfaces and the glossy surface of the coating around the encased strict building prism -imposed by the use of grid foundation of the old building- are the elements that form the distinctive character of the design. The open space invites the visitor to meander through the lush olive grove in varying promenades, surrounded by the olive trees, creating a sheltered buffer from suburban context. The paths lead to the timber shell, which can house up to 200 people during receptions, educational and cultural events. In proximity to the shell, a space of restand contemplation among the olive trees is formed. Scattered in the olive grove but near the paved paths, visitors will encounter landscaped resting spots where they can stop browsing and rest upon the roots of an olive tree. The project was analysed up to the implementation level and several geometrical and constructional problems relating to shell form finding and double-curvature paneling strategies were resolved. The durability and cost effectiveness contributed to technical decisions. The static analysis and the structural system as well as the study of the construction details contributed to the overall cost reduction.
